At Bradshaw & Bryant, PLLC, we work with investigators, the police, product safety experts, and traffic reconstruction professionals to show how your vehicle rolled over and who is responsible. Our Minnesota car accident lawyers demand compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, income loss, property damage, and all other damages. What is a rollover accident?
According to Autozonic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that nearly one in three of all deadly vehicle accidents in America are due to rollover crashes. While every vehicle can roll over if struck at a specific angle or if other conditions apply, the vehicles most prone to rollover accidents are SUVs and pickup trucks. These vehicles are more likely to flip on their side or onto their roof because they have a high center of gravity, because they have a narrow wheelbase.
The vehicles with the highest risk of a rollover accident, according to the NHTSA, are “the Jeep CJ-7, Chevrolet Blazer S-10 4WD, Ford F-150 SVT Lightening, GMC Jimmy 4WD, and the Ford F-350 Super Duty 4WD.” Some of the SUVs that have a high rollover risk factor include “the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan Xterra. Other cars at high risk include the Chevrolet Blazer, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Escape, and Toyota 4Runner.” Pickup trucks with long and narrow wheelbases have a high risk. Some small passenger cars with a high rollover risk include the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris.
Why do cars and other vehicles roll over in Minnesota?
Some of the safety measures drivers should take include being extra careful in bad weather (such as high winds or wet roads), ensuring that the tires have the proper inflation level and are relatively new, and avoiding quick steering maneuvers. Drivers should wear a seatbelt so they don’t get thrown around a vehicle that rolls over.
At Bradshaw & Bryant, PLLC, we work with professionals and through the discovery process (formal questioning everyone with knowledge of your accident) to show why your rollover accident happened and who should be held accountable.
Some of the common causes of rollover accidents include:
- Speeding. Drivers who turn too quickly, weave in and out lanes, and drive aggressively risk their car losing traction and overturning.
- Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol. Drunk drivers and drugged drivers often take more chances, increasing the risk of rolling over on their own or getting into an accident with another vehicle that can cause a rollover.
- Distracted driving. Rollover accidents often occur when cars hit a curb, which can launch them into the air, or when drivers switch lanes that have uneven road surfaces or different road surfaces on different lanes. Drivers who are distracted by texting, their GPS, or eating are less likely to see these curbs, lane changes, and dangerous road conditions.
- Tired drivers. Drivers who don’t get enough rest have poor judgment and poor reflexes, which can increase the risk of veering off the road, into another lane, or into another vehicle.
- Improperly secured or overloaded vehicles. The more cargo (luggage, work tools, etc.) that a vehicle has, the more likely the driver is to lose control of their vehicle. Heavy loads also change the vehicle’s center of gravity in ways that increase the risk of a rollover accident.
- Traffic violations. Any type of traffic offense, such as driving through a red light or failing to yield, can increase the risk of a collision, which increases the risk of a rollover accident. Rollovers are especially more likely if the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another vehicle.
Other causes of rollover accidents include defective brakes, steering, and other vehicle parts. Additionally, the design of a road or poor road maintenance can increase the risk of a rollover accident.
What injuries do rollover accidents cause in Minnesota?
Our Minnesota rollover accident lawyers handle all types of personal injuries. Rollover accidents often cause catastrophic, permanent, and chronic injuries. Many rollover accident victims require a lifetime of medical care. Tragically, many rollover accidents are fatal. Our car accident lawyers handle the following types of serious injuries:
- Head trauma. This injury includes traumatic brain injuries, concussions, and dental injuries. The more times the vehicle rotates (from side to roof to side), the higher the risk of head trauma is.
- Spinal cord injuries. Rollovers are violent accidents that wrench, twist, and forcefully impact an occupant’s spine. Victims may suffer spinal cord compression, fractured vertebrae, herniated disks, and other trauma. Spinal cord injuries can cause partial or complete paralysis.
- Burn injuries. The rotation of a vehicle can leave a driver or passenger trapped in the vehicle, making it hard to escape before the vehicle possibly catches fire. The risk of fires increases with rollover accidents because the gas can easily ignite, especially if it comes into contact with a hot engine.
- Other severe injuries. Our Minnesota rollover accident lawyers also handle the following severe injuries:
- Traumatic amputation/loss of limb
- Fractures/broken bones
- Nerve, tissue, muscle, ligament, and tendon damage
- Neck, shoulder, and back pain
- Severe cuts, lacerations, and bruises
- Scarring and disfigurement
We also represent families when rollover accidents are fatal.
